A TorchServe Commit Pointed pip at Two Extra Package Indexes

TorchServe, the model server in pytorch/serve, keeps its Python requirements in a
requirements/
folder, one file per platform and accelerator. In June 2023 commit b260776b5, “Enable opt-6.7b benchmark on inf2”, added support for AWS Inferentia2 machines. It added two requirements files, and each begins by pointing pip at another package index:

requirements/neuronx.txt --extra-index-url https://pip.repos.neuron.amazonaws.com
requirements/torch_neuronx_linux.txt --extra-index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cpu

Both indexes belong to the people who make the packages: AWS publishes its Neuron compiler and libraries on the first, and the PyTorch project publishes its CPU builds of torch on the second. That’s the normal way to get those packages. We ran Remixware 0.3.1’s dependency gate on the commit against its parent, offline, to see how it handles a change like this. The commands, hashes and output are in the Remixware repository.

Five Tested Recipes for the Remixware Dependency Gate

These are short setups for
remixware deps
, the check that compares a pull request’s lockfiles with main’s. Each one was run before it went on this page. The test repository is small: its main branch holds TypeScript’s
package-lock.json
from just before esbuild was added, and a pull request branch holds the lockfile from just after, the same change as in the TypeScript case study. The outputs below are copied from the recorded runs in test/results/case-studies/deps/recipes.

How One esbuild Line in TypeScript Became 23 Lockfile Packages and an Install Script

In 2022 the TypeScript team moved the compiler’s own build to esbuild, a fast JavaScript bundler written in Go. The first commit of that work, 4139807e7 in microsoft/TypeScript, is titled “Add build via esbuild”. Its change to
package.json
is one line in
devDependencies
:

+ "esbuild": "^0.15.13",

package-lock.json
grew from 742 packages to 765 in the same commit. We ran Remixware 0.3.1’s dependency gate on that commit against its parent, offline, to see what a reviewer would have been shown. The commands, hashes and full output are in the Remixware repository, and every number below comes from there.

Remixware Now Fails Pull Requests That Bring In Risky Dependencies

A pull request that adds one line to
package.json
can add forty packages to the lockfile. Reviewers read the line. Hardly anyone reads the lockfile, and that’s where a package nobody chose, or one that runs a script on every developer’s machine at install time, gets in.

Remixware 0.3 adds a second check for that moment.
remixware deps
compares the packages your lockfiles name with the ones on your main branch. A new package that isn’t on your allow list fails the change, whether you asked for it or another package pulled it in. So does an added or updated package that runs code when it’s installed, and, if you let it look online, a recent release by someone who didn’t publish or maintain the version before it.

The Hugo Deploy Command Brought In 18 New Go Modules Including the AWS SDK and gRPC

Hugo, the static site generator written in Go, has a
hugo deploy
command that uploads a built site to Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage or Azure Blob Storage. It arrived in commit c7165589 of gohugoio/hugo, “Add a “deploy” command”, written in December 2018 and committed to the main branch in May 2019. It works through gocloud.dev, the Go Cloud Development Kit, which gives one interface over the three storage services.

That’s the right tool for a command that talks to three clouds. It also means the code of all three clouds’ Go libraries comes along. In that commit
go.sum
went from 178 lines to 744, and the module list Remixware reads from
go.mod
and
go.sum
went from 81 modules to 105. We ran Remixware 0.3.1’s dependency gate on the commit against its parent, offline. The commands, hashes and output are in the Remixware repository, and the numbers here come from there.
